Establishments

As of 2023, Clinton County has an estimated population of 79,720. The County seat is St. Johns and was founded in 1831. The largest industry in Clinton County by number of establishments is Trade, Transportation, and Utilities (301 establishments) followed by Construction (216 establishments).

To be one of the industries with the most establishments in Clinton County, it must have at least 70 establishments. Of the industries in that group, Health Services & Private Education saw the fastest growth in Clinton County, increasing 27% from 2021 to 2023. However, all the industries with the most establishments experienced an increase between 2021 and 2023.

Employment

Trade, Transportation, and Utilities is the largest industry group by number of employees in Clinton County. Government is the second-largest industry in Clinton County. All three top industries by employment in Clinton County have seen increases in employment since 2021.

By growth in employment, manufacturing saw the greatest change from 2021 to 2023. Leisure and Hospitality also saw substantial growth in employment from 2021 to 2023 while Financial Activities had a decline in employment.

Employment in Manufacturing saw significant growth in Clinton County. In fact, the County outpaced Michigan and the nation by 30 percentage points each. Additionally, Leisure and Hospitality saw a 23% growth in employment in Clinton County. This sector also outpaced the state and the nation in employment growth.

Real GDP

Finance, insurance, real estate, rental, and leasing tops the list in Clinton County as the industry with the highest GDP ($818,734,000). Professional and Commercial Equipment and Real estate and rental and leasing occupies second position ($650,509,000).

One way to visualize industry earnings in Clinton County is imagining all earnings from all industries as a hundred dollars. Of that hundred dollars, three of the seven industries listed comprise $26. In total, those seven industries produce about $41. The remaining $59 is produced by all other industries, meaning that earnings in Clinton County are spread across a wide range of other sectors.
