The Tri-County Region, which includes Clinton, Eaton, and Ingham counties, has had a strong economic recovery since the pandemic. In fact, as of April 2023, unemployment reached pre-pandemic levels of 2.9%. Amid the pandemic, the monthly unemployment rate in the Tri-County Region peaked at 18.1%, nearly 4 points higher than the national rate. However, over the last five years, the Tri-County Region has seen unemployment rates mostly like the US, outside of the period during the pandemic.
GRP increased more than $2.6 million (8.9%) from 2021 to 2022, a greater increase than the year before. Overall GRP exceeded $32 million in 2022. The MSA has seen GRP growth in every year from 2012 to 2022. Positive GRP growth of 7.5% and 8.9% in each of the last two years signals an overall healthy economy going forward. The Lansing Metro (MSA) includes Clinton, Eaton, Ingham and Shiawassee counties.
The Lansing Region Labor Shed’s population is 1,202,187 as of 2023. Ingham County comprises 23.7% of the regional total at 284,637, which is not surprising, given it is the region’s hub. Ingham, Livingston, and Jackson Counties host 53.3% of the labor shed’s population. The counties with the lowest populations include Gratiot (41,368), Barry (63,808), and Ionia (66,262).
